Why one number and one reason works

A counter with a single number and a single, honest reason is easy for a recruiter to take to the hiring manager. A list of five asks is easy to say no to. If base is fixed, the backup asks (a sign-on bonus, an earlier review, more PTO) are often easier for a company to approve.
